"Judge" David P. Showmaker of Belleville portrays the arbiter, at their Saturday August 18 game under the Gateway Arch on the St. Louis riverfront. His outfit was purchased at a specialty shop to recreate the look of the 1860's. He also wears an authentic derby hat from the late 19th century which the team bought on eBay, to add another touch of historical realism to the team. The teams played by rules of the game as they were in the late 19th century -- when there were no umpires, only a lone arbiter to make judgement calls. The Stags, Cyclones, and the Unions competed in a round-robin exhibition to build interest in vintage base ball and were hosted on the site by the Federal Park Service, which had information booths and handouts for interested people.
