Volunteers meet with inmates at the Southwestern Illinois Correctional Center to audiotape them reading books to their children or grandchildren. Volunteers use digital audio recorders and then burn the audio file to a CD, which is mailed to the children or grandchidren of the inmate. The StoryBook Project is sponsored by the Lutheran Church, and conducted locally by Lutheran Social Services. Volunteer Sara Manley of Swansea has a regular assembly line going as she uses two laptops to burn CDs from the audio recorders the volunteers give her after the reading sessions. At far left are the mailing envelopes which inmates have addressed to their children or grandchildren.
