Volunteers meet with inmates at the Southwestern Illinois Correctional Center to audiotape them reading books to their children or grandchildren. Volunteers use digital audio recorders and then burn the audio file to a CD, which is mailed to the children or grandchidren of the inmate. The StoryBook Project is sponsored by the Lutheran Church, and conducted locally by Lutheran Social Services. Inmate Jason Darte helps match up inmates with readers and assists the volunteers who audiotape the inmates. Here, he uses inmate ID tages and matches them against a list.
