Belleville Stags outfield scout Bill "Bean" Evans tallies his ace as he scores at home plate in their Saturday August 18 game under the Gateway Arch on the St. Louis riverfront. You first had to ask permission of the arbiter (the forerunner of the modern-day umpire) to ring the bell (tally your ace). The home-made scoreboard displays the inning and the score. The Stags, Lafayette Cyclone, and the Unions competed in ao build interest in vintage base ball and were hosted on the site by the Federal Park Service, which had information booths and handouts for interested people. About 150 people around the perimeter of the makeshift field watched all or part of the three games the teams played.
