Jim Gillespie, a member of St. George's Episcopal Church in Belleville, was the first person to carry the cross during a religious procession at noon on Good Friday. The procession began at St. Luke's Catholic Church and meandered a few blocks through the neighborhood to St. Michael's Lutheran and St. George's Episcopal churches (which share a building). Members of the three churches take turns carrying the cross as they stop several times along the route to read Bible verses, pray and sing together. Good Friday is the day when Christians worldwide commemorate the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ, who rose from the dead two days later on Easter Sunday.
