O'Fallon firefighters were assisted by several other fire departments as they battled a stubborn apartment fire in downtown O'Fallon Friday morning. Here, "Grandma" Betty Austin (left) speaks with apartment resident Rose Root. Root got out safely, and her six year old son was already at school when the fire broke out. Austin was the one who told Root that the building was on fire. The two women work together at a nearby daycare, and when Austin told Root about the fire, Root took off running to find her apartment building on fire. Her apartment is on the lower level and at the opposite end of the origin of the fire and she hopes she doesn't have too much damage. Firefighters said the building could be unstable and she could not go in to retrieve any items yet.
