Police officers from throughout the region attended the funeral for Sari, the canine companion for Lt. Jim Lansing of the Monroe County Sheriff Department. A police motorcade from the Sheriff's Department arrived at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Columbia, where a brief service was held outside the church for Sari. Then the procession went to Sauget for burial at the canine training facility which is used by police dogs and their handlers from all over the area. Sari had worked with Lansing for ten years, and was scheduled to retire from service on August 1 -- the day she was buried. The 12 year-old German Shepherd died on July 20. She was originally from Hungary, and was trained in commands in the Hungarian language. Monsignor Carl Scherrer (right), pastor of the church, conducted the service for Sari outside the front entrance. At left is Lt. Jim Lansing and his wife Jeanine Lansing.
