U.S. Army Major General Thomas Richardson swears in new recruits during a ceremony at Scott AFB to recognize the Army's 238th birthday. Local mayors were also honored and presented with plaques. The culminating event of the ceremony was the cutting of a birthday cake with a ceremonial saber. Tradition calls for the saber to be held by the oldest Army soldier and the youngest. Friday morning a retired colonel, age 75, and recruit Bernie Cason, age 18 (he is second from right) were joined by Richardson in holding the saber to cut the cake.
